Sorapuru House Restoration Fundraiser

The Sorapuru House is a Creole cottage constructed for free people of color in 1825.  The property remains in the same family since its construction and was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. In June 2021, the Sorapuru Family donated a preservation easement to LTHP, providing legal protection for the property and its historic character into the future.

The house was damaged by Hurricane Ida several months later, when winds blew a large pecan tree onto the house. A restoration of the Sorapuru House will include repairs to the roof, porch, plaster, foundation and improving drainage at the site.  All tax-deductible donations to LTHP for the Sorapuru House will go toward the restoration of the Sorapuru House in their entirety.
