The current campus of Louisiana State University was formally dedicated on April 30, 1926. In recent years, new development has filled the area outside the North Gates of campus, along Chimes Street & Highland Road. Known as “Tiger Town”, the area has played an integral role in the social life & collective histories of LSU students & faculty for generations. In 2024, the Art Deco styled Kean’s Apartment Building was added to the National Register of Historic Places for its architectural character as well as its association with writers who won a total of nine Pulitzer Prizes. The area is under considerable risk of being demolished & replaced by new development. If Tiger Town’s historic commercial buildings are lost, the sense of place & memories of life on campus will forever be erased.
