Oleander Hotel

Construction on the Oleander Hotel began in 1929 and was completed in 1931, the same year the Grand Isle received electricity, radio and telephone service. It became popular for its offering of the American Plan rate, which included three meals a day with each room. The hotel advertised a close proximity to the Gulf of Mexico for sunbathing and fishing, and cool shaded porches for enjoying the constant breezes. It featured a fine dining restaurant and 29 guest rooms with screened porches. The hotel closed in the 1990s and the property is still privately owned. While structurally sound, the building must be completely updated for modern use. The nonprofit Restore Grand Isle is working to raise funds to purchase the Oleander Hotel and rehabilitate it for use as a welcome center and cultural arts center.
