In the 1840’s, Zebulon Pike Gathright arrived in Brashear City, an early name for what is now known as Morgan City. Colonel Gathright was an early investor in real estate and he chose a spot for his home across from today’s city hall. Gathright died in 1877, and his home passed to his heirs. It was purchased by the Lind family in 1984, who donated the historic cypress cottage to the City of Morgan City. The Gathright home is the second oldest home in Morgan City and holds a place on the National Register of Historic Places. It was moved to its current location in 1994, but has remained vacant for a number of years. Reconstruction of the back wall, replacement of rotten wood and termite damage as well as drainage improvements are needed to return the Gathright House to a usable condition.
